A group exhibition with:

A false awakening is a vivid dream in which the dreamers think they have awakened from sleep even though they continue to dream. Elements of the dream may seem normal at first, but gradually become more surreal. In this exhibition, we will use the concept of false awakenings to showcase works that play with the viewer’s sense of reality. The works will explore the tension between the familiar and the unexpected. Both abstract and representational works will be included, addressing the theme from a variety of approaches, including form and texture, landscape and portraiture. The works may draw on dreams or dream-like experiences of the artists, depicting eerie or bizarre renditions of the ordinary.

The works in this exhibition are based on memories of nature, which I approach with a sense of wonder, reverence, awe and mystery. My drawings and collages evoke certain landscapes and geological processes, exploring how materials settle into place over time. They draw inspiration from my observations of rocks, erosion, and the large- and small-scale changes that waves create along various shorelines.

Executed in graphite, the drawings in Dissipate record the lift, drag and back-and-forth movement of sediment as waves carry it, never deposited in the same position twice. I record small actions and traces along with larger sweeping marks.

My collages explore how rocks can be reconstructed from the fragments that remain after the processes of erosion and collapse have taken place. Using pieces of photographs of rocks that I was unable to bring home from Nova Scotia, I have built new rock surfaces, imagining what they may look like before they break down or how they may appear different after waves wear them down.
